Richard Elliott Pettit passed away Sunday afternoon at 3:10 p.m., after an extended illness, at the home of his son, James Marion Pettit, 1106 Roland ave. He was born in Marion, Ind., March 4, 1853, and was married to Sarah Kier on May 25th, 1879. To this union were born five children, two daughters and three sons: Mrs. Loren Lyons, of Stanberry, Missouri; Mrs. Alvin LaForge, Big Timber, Montana; Mr. Troy Pettit, Stanberry, Mo.; Mr. James Marion Pettit, Chariton, Iowa; Mr. Myron Pettit, Pickering, Mo. Besides his wife and children and nine grandchildren there are left to mourn his loss two sisters and one brother, Mrs. John Kieffer, and Mrs. Lucinda Lyons, of Vinton, Iowa, and Mr. Joseph Pettit, Cedar Rapids, Ia.

He was of a kind and loving disposition and always wanted to help others. He made friends of all with whom he came in contact. He made his home with his son here in Chariton from July 2 until his death, which came on Sunday, Nov. 27, 1927, at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 23 days. All that medical skill could do to alleviate his suffering and restore his health was done, but to no avail. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Beardsley Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. J. D. Pontius. Interment was in the Chariton cemetery.
