He attended schools in Arizona, graduating from Chandler High School in 1940. He entered the military service, serving as an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force. He was discharged in 1946 after spending one year in Guam, then started civilian flying in Chandler. He also owned a flight school there.

Excommunicated in 1974. David Walter's blessings were restored 27 May 1979.
