Notes for ELLIOT ALVAH BROOKS:

Son of Charles Alvah and Emma S (Grover) Brooks.
Born: July 28, 1888 in Orient, Suffolk county, Long Island, New York.
Died: December, 1949 in Unknown.
Buried: Central Cemetery, Orient, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
Married: Jessie Adelia Gordon February 1, 1913 in Unknown.

Returning to Orient full-time during his retirement, Brooks was a self-taught artist, studying art on his own after possibly being introduced to painting by William Steeple Davis, Harry Roseland or James Knox, all living in Orient. Initially, he painted small marine paintings. Eventually, he skillfully executed local landscapes and seascapes. Brooks' early, naive paintings, imbued with a charming folk art quality, gave way to sophisticated seascapes as his style became more refined. His prolific career includes a gift to the public: The "Indian Rocks". These carved boulders, found near the Brown Hills Sound shoreline, feature the likenesses of Native Americans. E.A. Brooks often painted with fellow Peconic Bay Impressionists, Caroline Bell, Annie Young, Madeline Bassarear, Clara Howard, Marguerite Hawkins and Rachel Beebe.
