LOGAN, Utah Ruth Richards Payne, 77, passed away Jan. 4, 2000, at her home in Logan, Utah.

Ruth was born on June 27, 1922, in Paris, Idaho, the daughter of Wilford W. and Elfie S. Richards.

She was always very bright, skipping the second grade and graduating from Logan High School at age 16 in 1939.

She earned her bachelor's degree and teaching certificate from Utah State Agricultural College in 1942.

She also graduated that year from the LDS Institute, which was headed by her father.

She met her sweetheart, Clair, at USAC and waited for him during the years he was in the military during World War II. They were wed March 22, 1946, in the Logan Temple. Shortly afterward Clair began medical school in St. Louis, and Ruth supported him while he earned his degree.

Throughout the years Ruth "ran the books" for Clair's practice, served as Relief Society President and in other church callings, and raised four children.

She suffered from ill health for most of her adult life but was never known to complain.

She will always be remembered for her pleasant disposition and constant dedication to her family.

Ruth is survived by her husband of more than 53 years, Dr. Clair L. Payne; sister Jean (Dave) Dance, Seattle, Washington; brother, Dr. Lynn Richards, Bountiful, Utah; son Brent (Ginny) Payne, Burley, Idaho; daughter Marianna (John) Larsen, North Logan, Utah; son John (Fran) Payne, Nibley, Utah; and daughter Kathy (Steve) Bylund, Boise, Idaho. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her brother, Grant Richards, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at noon at the Logan 24th Ward Chapel, 1260 N. 1600 East.

Friends may call at Cranney Mortuary, 420 E. 1800 North, North Logan, on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. or at the Church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Logan Cemetery.
