SAMUEL B. CALDWELL DEAD.
The American Agent at Seville Expires in London.
London, Jan. 7 - Samuel B. CALDWELL, the American agent at Seville, Spain, died at St. Thomas Hospital London, this morning. Mr. CALDWELL was seventy-eight years of age.

Samuel B. CALDWELL was born near Newburgh, Orange county, N. Y., in 1822. His maternal grandfather was a captain in the Revolutionary war, and afterward a colonel and a State Senator in New York. He was a large landowner and also owned the forge in which were cast the chains stretched across the Hudson to intercept the British fleet.

Mr. CALDWELL was one of the oldest men in the Consular Service. His office as consular agent is under the supervision of the United States Consul at Cadiz. He was first appointed in 1885 and each succeeding consul reappointed him. He returned from his post on April 21, 1898, at the outbreak of the Spanish war and was reappointed to his old post on October 31, 1899. He has a record of good service in the department. He was a linguist of considerable note.
