James S. Holmes of East Orange, New Jersey wrote to Emory Holloway:
"It seems that after the death of Walt Whitman's grandmother, Mr. Van Velsor, though then an old gentleman, married a young widow and my mother was the result of this marriage. Mrs. Houston, when she married Mr. Van Velsor, had one daughter (Eliza Emily who lived with my parents until her death at the age of nearly 90. She never married and the family always concluded, from what little she would say, that she and Walt were very fond of each other, though her side of the family, at that time, considering him eccentric."
