Samuel Van Velsor is the half-brother of Major Cornelius Van Velsor and uncle of Louisa Van Velsor, Walt Whitman's mother. In the 1800, 1810, and 1830 New York Federal Census, a "Samuel Velzer" is listed as living in Huntington Township, Soffolk County, New York, next door to his father and mother, Garret and Levinah. The 1810 Census lists him on page 236, ID#NYS1a328513; and the 1830 Census lists him on page 323, ID# NYS3a190842. Samuel Van Velsor was born during the American Revolution and was in his early twenties when his son Baily was born in Cold Spring Harbor. Samuel was the executor of his father Garret's will, in which Garret bequeathed his weaver's loom to Samuel. Records exist of Samuel of Samuel Van Velsor living in New York City in 1835. According to Whitney's Notebook, his date of death was July 4, 1842, which would have made him approximately 64 when he passed away. Whitney scrawled a note beside Samuel's date of death. It said 'Little Eastwoods".
